Fall Break is Here and Bats are REAL!

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons along with Spring! I love the smell of ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pumpkin lingering and flowing through my kitchen air. Not to mention the leaves falling and the beautiful fall colors (I can see on Instagram posts from other states.) I live in the beautiful Chihuahuan Desert so it’s rare to see full fall colors in effect, at the most we get yellow and orange.

And now, Fall Break! I’m enjoying a whole 5 days off from school, students, administrators, and teachers! I was sure ready for this break and enjoying every single second :). Do you have a fall break?
My students and I kicked off Fall Break with Deanna Jump’s Non-Fiction Unit on Bats. As usual and always so much fun with her stuff! I have to say my favorite part of this unit is when students discover bats aren’t vampires, they are real, and they don’t suck your blood! It’s a perfect way to introduce the word “misconceptions” they just “click and get it.” After our unit is complete, every single one of my students can explain why bats are indeed real, why they are not vampires, and can make a bat using shapes around us. Have a great long weekend y’all and here are some batty over bats pictures from our lesson!

On day one we make our KWL chart and add stick notes to the “what I learned section” every day. As we learn and discover that bats are real, we recognize and clear up any misconceptions and remove them from “what I know” to our misconceptions section. P.S. I let the students make those connections on their own, when we review, what  we know about bats, and what we have learned.
On day two we label our bat diagram and  talk about a bat’s body parts.  We also discover that bat’s are really brown not black, they have hair and are mammals.

Day 3 we make our bats during math. We compose bat body shapes from squares and rectangles.  And discuss how we can make shapes from other shapes.

We also gather all of our batty facts on a bat concept map and write a short paragraph together. I lead the discussion by guiding students to use bat facts in complete sentences, then I write them down.

I just read your little bio about going from learning in 5th to beginning K after the year began! Yikes. I taught K for a very long time. I am currently a 1-2 combo teacher in APS but in the E mtns. It is tricky, but not as tricky as what you did. 🙂 Looks like you have a handle on it now though. In November we should be having a bloggy meet up with some other NM bloggers. Hope you can join us. It's always fun.

Mine was Mrs. Richardson, 3rd grade! She taught me how to write in cursive and I loved it! It was my favorite time of the day!

•Therefore taking care of the body, mind, and soul has always been a priority to us.
•It is so easy to get burnt out, discouraged, and lose #momentum in our professions and the simple things in life.
•We promised each other to always make time for three things because of this. They are God, Us, and our home. Everything around us can be falling apart… sometimes even us, but finding our Identity in the one who sets us free, always brings us back to reality and being grounded!

•So, Dear Teacher, Make time to ground yourself and make your family your priority! Have a Happy Sunday! For us, #sunday is for church 💞 and remember #selfcare is continuous.

Happy 88th birthday to pioneering British primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall! A trailblazer in the study of chimpanzee behavior, Dr. Goodall is known worldwide for her animal welfare and conservation efforts, and the establishment of the Jane Goodall Institute. She has been named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a UN Messenger of Peace. The Jane Goodall Institute, founded in 1977, is a non-profit that works to increase global awareness and understanding about the natural world, and in particular the lives and habitats of primates. To this day, Goodall still travels to Gombe frequently and actively encourages the involvement of youth around the world in conservation work, particularly through her "Roots and Shoots" program. To introduce young children to this trailblazing scientist, we highly recommend the board book "Where's Jane" for ages 2 to 5 (www.amightygirl.com/where-s-jane), the picture books "Jane Goodall" for ages 5 to 8 (www.amightygirl.com/jane-goodall) and "I Am Jane Goodall" for ages 4 to 8 (www.amightygirl.com/i-am-jane-goodall), and the chapter book "Jane Goodall" for ages 4 to 7 (www.amightygirl.com/jane-goodall-champion)For older children and teens, we recommend "Who is Jane Goodall" for ages 8 to 12 (www.amightygirl.com/who-is-jane-goodall), an autobiography by Goodall for readers 8 and up entitled "My Life with the Chimpanzees" (www.amightygirl.com/my-life-with-the-chimpanzees), and the graphic novel “Primates” for ages 12 and up (www.amightygirl.com/primates)Adult readers may appreciate the following works by Dr. Goodall herself: "The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times" (amzn.to/2PTVhUl), "In the Shadow of Man" (amzn.to/1pFBNcv), and "Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey" (amzn.to/1uPdiAG)For children's books that celebrate more pioneering female environmentalists, visit our blog post "25 Kids' Books About Female Environmentalists" at www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=14831And for kids for want to pretend to be Jane, we recommend the 'Chimpanzee Care & Nurture Vet Set' for ages 3 and up at www.amightygirl.com/nat-geo-chimp-care ... There, I said it! I still use magnetic letters in #thirdgrade • Struggling readers struggle because they aren’t proficient in letter sound correspondence or as they get older, in spelling patterns.• Stop pushing “more reading” and start teaching phonemes and phonological awareness.• Trust me your students and families will thank you! ———While reading comprehension is huge in third grade, I encourage you to strategically use those magnetic letters during small group instruction and watch those comprehension skills soar ✨————#thirdgradeteacher #iteachthird #maestrabilingue #tchr888 #maestrasdeinstagram #reading #nbctstrong ...
